At The Referendum List, we fully expect to have to wait a couple of weeks to receive official replies from Members of Parliament, but some correspondents have started to email in responses that they have received independently.

The first is from Kate Hoey MP (Labour | Vauxhall) who says...

Yes I do support a referendum and raised it with the PM today – will send you the Hansard tomorrow best wishes Kate

The second is from Ann Coffey MP (Labour | Stockport) who takes an entirely different tack.

I stand for a Party who makes this position clear at General Elections and therefore do not support any calls to withdraw from or have a referendum on Europe.

Leaving aside the fact that the party that she stands for was actually the party that, in 1975, called the last referendum on this subject, I feel that it behoves me to point out to Ann Coffey MP that the manifesto on which the Labour Party was re-elected is, indeed, quite clear: the Labour Party would hold a referendum on the EU Constitution.

The only debate left is whether or not the EU Reform Treaty is, in fact, the Constitution in substance and thus whether the Labour manifesto promise applies to it.

Most observers agree that, yes, the EU Reform Treaty is, in fact, the Constitution.
